The manuals converge on a strong respect for unusual spiritual, mystical, transpersonal, or value-related experiences. Across the extracts, they recommend accepting these experiences as real and important to the participant, avoiding pathologising them simply because they are unfamiliar or spiritually framed, and remaining open to the participant’s own meaning-making rather than imposing a therapist-led interpretation. Several sources also link this stance to integration, with experiences being brought into ordinary life, ongoing psychological care, or change planning when relevant. The manuals differ mainly in emphasis and context. The MDMA manuals foreground transpersonal, perinatal, oneness, and expanded identity experiences, and explicitly note that therapists do not need to determine the ontological status of such experiences or interpret metaphysics. The ibogaine extract places more emphasis on spiritual, archetypal, or religiously framed content and culturally respectful language, while the psilocybin and cancer follow-up extract highlights spiritually significant material as part of emotional and existential processing, and the alcohol use disorder paper adds explicit attention to spiritual significance, values, and participant-defined relevance in debriefing and change planning.
