Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Graduate Certificate Program
The Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Graduate Certificate Program is designed for professional therapists and clinicians who wish to train in and support psychedelic-assisted therapies.
Course Overview
The Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Graduate Certificate Program is designed for professional therapists and clinicians who wish to train in and support psychedelic-assisted therapies. The program focuses on the opportunities and challenges of this advanced practice area. Participants will be part of a small, interdisciplinary learning community that aims to enhance their therapeutic capacity and provide safe and inclusive care.
The program starts in September and comprises four courses, with the first three being online theory courses. The final course, PAT 504, is a hybrid course that includes both online learning and in-person supervised practice in a program that delivers psychedelic-assisted therapies. The full program can be completed remotely if an approved practicum site is available near the trainee's location.
The program is 15 credits in total and covers the following topics:

PAT 502: Psychedelic Medicine: Trauma-Informed and Inclusive Care
PAT 503: Psychedelic-assisted Therapy: Professional Practice
PAT 504: Psychedelic-assisted Therapy in Practice (Practicum)

Admission requirements include an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in health, human services, or related fields, a resume with a cover letter and professional references, at least two years of related experience in the field, and an interview. For applicants whose previous degree was obtained in a country where English is not the primary/official language, they must meet one of VIU's English Language requirements for Academic Programs.

Professional practitioners seeking training in psychedelic-assisted therapies, including therapists, clinicians, traditional healers, spiritual care providers, physicians, nurses, somatic energy practitioners, and clinician allies.
Prerequisites
An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in health, human services, or related fields.Resume with cover letter and professional references.Two years related experience in a related field will be prioritized, which should be reflected in one’s cover letter and resume and verifiable by references provided.An interview will take place.Applicants whose previous degree was obtained in a country where English is not the primary/official language and from a university where English was not the language of instruction must meet one of VIU’s English Language requirements for Graduate Programs.Notes on AdmissionPreference will be given to candidates with a clinician and/or therapy license and for those with experience in the related field.Applicants admitted without a license to practice will be supervised by a licensed practitioner.Fieldwork and/or practica will require a satisfactory criminal record check prior to placement. The Registration Centre at VIU will contact prospective students regarding the Criminal Record Check. Criminal Record Checks are processed through the Ministry according to the Criminal Records Review Act. A check completed through the RCMP is not sufficient to meet the requirements of the Act.Applicants who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.Applicants without a bachelor’s degree but who have a minimum 5 years’ of recent and relevant training and therapy/clinical experience at a credible training or treatment institute/centre may request consideration for admission. Applicants will be considered by the program coordinator on an individual basis.
About the Provider
In response to the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, a research group at Vancouver Island University (VIU) has been awarded funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the exploration of psychedelic therapies for front-line workers. Led by Dr Shannon Dames, the team are currently focusing on ketamine-assisted therapy for front-line workers experiencing symptoms of PTSD and emotional distress as a result of their experiences working through the pandemic.
