Ayahuasca for Personality & Trait Factors

24 papers and 0 clinical trials exploring ayahuasca as a treatment for personality & trait factors.

Compoundclassic psychedelic

Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca is a botanical decoction combining DMT with MAO-inhibiting harmala alkaloids, producing intense psychedelic effects lasting 3-6 hours. Clinical trials show rapid, large antidepressant effects from a single dose, with a favourable safety profile in controlled settings.

Full Ayahuasca profile
IndicationApproximately 10 million adults in the UK suffer from a personality disorder.

Personality & Trait Factors

Psychedelic research is increasingly examining the interplay between personality traits and therapeutic outcomes in various mental health conditions. Recent studies highlight how certain personality traits may influence the efficacy of psychedelic treatments, particularly in managing disorders like depression and anxiety.

Symmetrical Global Mental Health (Sym-GMH): Ayahuasca and shipibo traditional medicine for lasting changes in personality and quality of life

This prospective longitudinal study (n=264) of Western participants attending Shipibo-led ayahuasca retreats found improvements in quality of life and decentering over 12 months, alongside lower neuroticism and higher extraversion. Most participants reported lasting benefits, and adverse effects were minimal.

DMT and harmala alkaloids: an exploratory study of oral Acacia based formulations in healthy volunteers

In this open-label exploratory crossover study of nine experienced ayahuasca users, three Acacia‑derived oral formulations delivering DMT plus harmala alkaloids were well tolerated, produced no clinically significant physiological changes, and elicited psychedelic effects rated comparable to (and for ACL‑010 sometimes more beneficial than) traditional ayahuasca. These findings suggest Acacia‑based DMT/harmala formulations are a feasible alternative for future clinical trials, although generalisability is limited by the small sample size and open‑label design.

Long-Term Mental Health and Wellbeing Outcomes Associated with Naturalistic Ayahuasca Consumption

This naturalistic longitudinal study (n=66) investigates the long-term effects of ayahuasca on mental health in adults with no prior exposure. Participants attending neo-shamanic ceremonies reported sustained improvements in depression, anxiety, stress, affect, personality traits, spirituality, and relationships up to 12 months. Individuals with depression or anxiety experienced lasting symptom reductions, while those without a diagnosis had short-term benefits. Alcohol and cannabis use decreased only at one month. Findings suggest ayahuasca's mental health benefits persist, with varying trajectories of change over time.

Increases in Aesthetic Experience Following Ayahuasca Use: A Prospective, Naturalistic Study

In a prospective naturalistic study of 54 retreat attendees, participants showed increased aesthetic experience at one week and one month after an ayahuasca ceremony compared with baseline. These increases were not predicted by acute drug effects (mystical-type experiences, awe, ego dissolution), though the open‑label design limits causal conclusions.

Effects of Ayahuasca on Gratitude and Relationships with Nature: A Prospective, Naturalistic Study

This longitudinal study (n=54) investigates the effects of ayahuasca retreat experiences on gratitude, nature relatedness, and nature appreciation. Findings reveal significant increases in these factors at one-week and one-month follow-ups compared to baseline. Ratings of mystical experiences and awe during ayahuasca sessions weakly-to-moderately correlate with these increases, highlighting their potential role in post-ayahuasca changes. Participant age negatively relates to the occurrence of mystical experiences and awe, indicating diminished effects with increased age. The study emphasizes the quality of experiences over quantity in influencing post-ayahuasca changes, suggesting potential mental health benefits associated with prosocial changes in gratitude and nature relationships.

Ayahuasca-induced personal death experiences: prevalence, characteristics, and impact on attitudes toward death, life, and the environment

Across two cross-sectional studies (n = 54 and n = 306), the authors show that ayahuasca-induced personal death (APD) experiences occur in over half of ceremony participants and are typically intense, transformative events associated with a greater sense of transcending death and certainty in continuity of consciousness. APDs were not linked to demographics, personality or psychopathology but were associated with increased environmental concern and improved coping and life fulfilment, suggesting they may contribute to psychedelics’ long-term beneficial effects.
