Ibogaine for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)

10 papers and 1 clinical trial exploring ibogaine as a treatment for alcohol use disorder (aud).

CompoundIndole Alkaloid

Ibogaine

A unique indole alkaloid with complex pharmacology, investigated primarily for its capacity to interrupt substance use disorders and withdrawal.

Full Ibogaine profile
IndicationOver 100 million cases worldwide, making AUD the most common substance use disorder.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a prevalent condition characterised by an inability to control alcohol consumption despite adverse consequences. Emerging research indicates that psychedelics may offer promising therapeutic avenues for treating AUD, with various compounds showing potential in clinical trials.

Oxa-noribogaine reduces alcohol drinking through aversion learning and by altering glutamatergic activity in the mPFC

This rat study found that the ibogaine-derived compound oxa-noribogaine reduced alcohol drinking and relapse-like drinking by strengthening learning from negative drinking outcomes and changing glutamatergic activity in the prefrontal cortex. It also appeared to match or exceed ibogaine’s effects without detectable motor or cardiac problems.

A qualitative analysis of participant expectations and experiences of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for methamphetamine use disorder

Participants in a pilot study of psilocybin‑assisted psychotherapy for methamphetamine use disorder found the intervention acceptable and reported that confronting vividly challenging psychedelic experiences—described as “leaning into the obstacle”—fostered new self‑understandings and shifts in relationships that reduced the salience of methamphetamine. A strong therapeutic alliance, characterised by concentrated attention and intersubjective intimacy, was seen as critical to these positive changes.

Psychedelic treatment for co-occurring alcohol misuse and post-traumatic stress symptoms among United States Special Operations Forces Veterans

In a retrospective survey of 27 US Special Operations Forces veterans who completed a psychedelic treatment programme in Mexico, self‑reported alcohol misuse and post‑traumatic stress symptoms showed marked reductions with very large effect sizes (d≈–2.4 to –2.8) and 85% reduced drinking to non‑risky levels, while psychological flexibility increased. The uncontrolled, retrospective design limits causal inference, and the authors call for rigorous longitudinal trials to determine whether psychedelic‑assisted therapy is effective in this population.

Ibogaine Blocks Cue- and Drug-Induced Reinstatement of Conditioned Place Preference to Ethanol in Male Mice

In male mice, repeated oral ibogaine (10 or 30 mg/kg) did not produce conditioned place preference but blocked both cue‑ and drug‑induced reinstatement of ethanol‑conditioned place preference in priming‑injection and context‑re‑exposure tests. This indicates ibogaine at non‑rewarding doses may reduce relapse‑like alcohol seeking and warrants consideration as a potential treatment for alcohol use disorder.

Do Hallucinogens Have a Role in the Treatment of Addictions? A Review of the Current Literature

This paper (2021) reviews the current literature regarding LSD, psilocybin, ketamine, ibogaine, and ayahuasca as potential treatments for addiction. The authors conclude that the available evidence is promising, but that more robust research is needed.

A case report SPECT study and theoretical rationale for the sequential administration of ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT in the treatment of alcohol use disorder

This case report SPECT imaging study explored the sequential administration of ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT in the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). It reported that the patient felt improvement in mood, cessation of alcohol use, and decreased cravings at 5 days post-treatment, but the patient returned partially to mild alcohol use at 2 months. Also, higher perfusion in multiple brain regions broadly associated with AUD and known pharmacology of both compounds was reported.
