LSD for Neurological Injury

5 papers and 0 clinical trials exploring lsd as a treatment for neurological injury.

Compoundclassic psychedelic

LSD

LSD is a classic psychedelic ergoline with high potency at microgram doses and an 8-12 hour duration of action, mediated primarily via 5-HT2A receptor agonism. Modern Phase IIb data in generalised anxiety disorder and FDA Breakthrough Therapy Designation for MM120 have reignited clinical development.

IndicationApproximately 15 million individuals experience a stroke annually, while traumatic brain injuries occur in around 69 million people worldwide each year.

Neurological Injury

Neurological injury encompasses various forms of brain damage resulting from trauma, strokes, or other factors, leading to significant functional impairment. Recent research into psychedelic compounds presents promising avenues for innovative therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing recovery and alleviating associated psychological conditions such as PTSD and depression.

Distributed harmonic patterns of structure-function dependence orchestrate human consciousness

Decomposing fMRI into connectome harmonics, the authors show that multi-scale structure–function coupling is a generalisable marker of consciousness: it increases during loss of consciousness (anaesthesia or brain injury)—distinguishing behaviourally indistinguishable patient subgroups and indexing covert consciousness—while LSD and ketamine produce the opposite decoupling that correlates with physiological and subjective measures.

LSD, afterglow and hangover: Increased episodic memory and verbal fluency, decreased cognitive flexibility

This trial (n=24) investigated the effects LSD (50 μg) has on cognition in healthy volunteers. It was found that LSD sub-acutely improved visuospatial memory and phonological verbal fluency and impaired cognitive flexibility when compared to placebo.

The chemical induction of synaesthesia

Surveying recreational users and developmental synaesthetes for 28 psychoactive drugs, the study found that serotonergic compounds—especially tryptamines and LSD—most frequently induce synaesthesia (commonly sound–colour), with induction rates clustering by drug class and similar patterns in controls and synaesthetes. The results support a serotonergic contribution to chemically induced synaesthesia, while also indicating individual susceptibility and possible involvement of non-serotonergic pathways.

Severe Neurological Sequelae after a Recreational Dose of LSD

This case report highlights that LSD can be dangerous, leading to seizure and brain damage, but this should be read in the context of millions of dosages (of LSD) being taken each year.

Abnormal visual experiences in individuals with histories of hallucinogen use: A web-based questionnaire

This questionnaire-based study (n=2455) found that the risk of Hallucinogen Persisting Perception Disorder (HPPD) may increase with greater past exposure to specific hallucinogens, symptoms were rarely (4.2%) perceived as distressing/impairing.
