Course Overview
CIIS’s Doctor of Philosophy in Human Sexuality is a primarily online, hybrid doctoral program in critical sexuality studies. The curriculum emphasizes intersectional and critical perspectives on sexuality, including attention to race, ethnicity, gender, class, age, ability, national origin, religion, and geography. Students complete coursework, evaluate theories and methods, and examine power structures and the social organization of sex and gender. The program includes four semesters of 44 units of online coursework, with asynchronous readings and discussion boards, followed by two comprehensive exams and a dissertation that contributes original research to the field. The program is intended for early- and mid-career professionals preparing for work in research, education, clinical and counseling settings, advocacy and policy, nonprofit health organizations, entrepreneurship, and governmental or NGO roles. Academic residency weekends are also part of the structure, combining in-person participation with Zoom sessions.
