M.A. in Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion
CIIS’s online M.A. in Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion examines how religions, spiritualities, and philosophies can respond to ecological crisis. Students study environmental issues through transdisciplinary, contemplative, and social justice-oriented approaches.
Course Overview
The Master of Arts in Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion is an online graduate program focused on the relationship between ecological crisis, religious thought, spirituality, and philosophy. The curriculum emphasizes transdisciplinary study and asks students to engage questions about how worldviews, practices, and lifeways can support more just and flourishing futures for human and more-than-human communities. Students learn in a community of scholars and activists, with coursework drawing from religious studies, philosophy, environmental humanities, social sciences, and environmental policy. The program also highlights contemplative practice, rigorous scholarship, and social justice. The curriculum includes study of one or more religious traditions, one or more ecological issues, and the epistemological and philosophical challenges involved in studying religion and ecology. Featured courses include Ecology in a Time of Planetary Crisis, Theory and Method in the Integrative Study of Religion and Ecology, and Indigenous Lifeways and Ecology. The program length is 2 years and the format is fully online.
