Using topographic q‑EEG in a double‑blind crossover trial, ayahuasca produced dose‑dependent, time‑locked changes in brain electrical activity—marked decreases in absolute power (especially theta) and increases in faster beta subbands that began within 15–30 min, peaked at 45–120 min and returned to baseline within 4–6 h—paralleling subjective psychedelic effects. The EEG profile is consistent with mediation by serotonergic (5‑HT2) and dopaminergic (D2) receptor agonism.
