This commentary (2026) proposes that exercise and psychedelics may complement each other as treatments for major depressive disorder through several biological mechanisms (e.g., synergistic effects on BDNF, neuroplasticity, glutamate, and serotonin) as well as psychological mechanisms (e.g., psychedelics facilitating exercise habit adoption and exercise), potentially enabling deeper psychedelic experiences.
