Ibogaine for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

6 papers and 2 clinical trials exploring ibogaine as a treatment for traumatic brain injury (tbi).

CompoundIndole Alkaloid

Ibogaine

A unique indole alkaloid with complex pharmacology, investigated primarily for its capacity to interrupt substance use disorders and withdrawal.

Full Ibogaine profile
IndicationApproximately 70 million individuals worldwide sustain a TBI each year.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Psychedelics are being investigated for their potential therapeutic effects on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), a condition that frequently results in various physical and psychological impairments. Early preclinical studies suggest that these compounds may influence inflammatory responses, promote neuroplasticity, and enhance neurogenesis, offering new avenues for treatment.

Clinical improvement following an integrative iboga microdosing protocol in post-concussive and hypoxic brain injury syndromes: a case series

This case series (n=3) describes three people with persistent symptoms after traumatic brain injury or hypoxic brain injury who took a 6-week iboga microdosing protocol alongside psychotherapy and supportive care. All three reported marked improvement, and two said their symptoms had fully resolved at long-term follow-up, but the authors do not claim the treatment caused these changes.

Increased cortical thickness and decreased brain age among special operations veterans with blast TBI after a magnesium-ibogaine protocol

This secondary analysis of an observational study (n=30) - named MISTIC - of Special Operations Forces veterans with blast-related traumatic brain injury, examined ibogaine given with magnesium and found increased cortical thickness, larger subcortical volumes and a lower estimated brain age one month later. The authors note that the MRI changes could reflect neuroplastic effects, although the scans may also be influenced by non-structural factors.

Mystical experiences during magnesium-Ibogaine are associated with improvements in PTSD symptoms in veterans

This secondary analysis of an open-label study (n=30) of male Veterans with traumatic brain injury found that greater intensity of mystical experiences during magnesium-ibogaine treatment was associated with larger reductions in PTSD severity both immediately and one month post-treatment, as well as greater reductions in peak alpha frequency at one month.

Magnesium-ibogaine therapy effects on cortical oscillations and neural complexity in veterans with traumatic brain injury

This analysis of an open-label observational study (n=30) found that magnesium-ibogaine therapy in combat veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) led to slower brain wave patterns and reduced neural complexity on EEG, which correlated with improvements in PTSD, anxiety, and cognitive function at one-month follow-up.

Magnesium-ibogaine therapy in veterans with traumatic brain injuries

This observational study (n=30) evaluates ibogaine (up to 980mg/70kg) in combination with magnesium (1-2 hours before and 12 hours later) in male Special Operations Forces veterans with predominantly mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The study assessed changes in disability, PTSD, depression, and anxiety immediately and one month after treatment using various scales. Results show significant improvements in functioning and psychological symptoms with no serious adverse events.

Prospective associations of psychedelic treatment for co-occurring alcohol misuse and posttraumatic stress symptoms among United States Special Operations Forces Veterans

This prospective study (n=86) evaluated the effects of ibogaine & 5-MeO-DMT treatment on risky alcohol use & PTSD symptoms among US Special Operations Forces Veterans. It found a significant reduction in alcohol use from pre-treatment to 1-month, 3-months, and 6-months post-treatment, and large differences between responders and non-responders in PTSD symptom and cognitive functioning change, suggesting that psychedelic-assisted therapy may hold promise for individuals with complex trauma and alcohol misuse.
