LSD for Public Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change

25 papers and 0 clinical trials exploring lsd as a treatment for public health, prevention & behaviour change.

Compoundclassic psychedelic

LSD

LSD is a classic psychedelic ergoline with high potency at microgram doses and an 8-12 hour duration of action, mediated primarily via 5-HT2A receptor agonism. Modern Phase IIb data in generalised anxiety disorder and FDA Breakthrough Therapy Designation for MM120 have reignited clinical development.

IndicationApproximately 20% of adults experience a mental health issue in any given year worldwide.

Public Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change

Current research into psychedelics as a means of public health intervention highlights their potential in addressing various behavioural health conditions. As clinical trials expand, the implications for prevention and behaviour change are becoming increasingly apparent.

Implementing psychedelic-assisted therapy: History and characteristics of the Swiss limited medical use program

This review (2025) of the Swiss limited access scheme describes how approximately 100 physicians treated 723 patients with MDMA, LSD, or psilocybin in 2024, with patients typically receiving 2-4 psychedelic-assisted therapy sessions within 12 months for treatment-resistant conditions.

LSD-assisted therapy in patients with anxiety: open-label prospective 12-month follow-up

In a planned 12‑month open‑label follow‑up of a double‑blind, placebo‑controlled crossover trial, LSD‑assisted therapy produced sustained, clinically significant reductions in anxiety and depression with large effect sizes lasting up to nearly two years after treatment. Participants also showed decreased neuroticism, increased extraversion and reported positive long‑term effects attributed to the psychedelic experience.

Psychedelics-assisted psychotherapy: Experiences with the limited medical use of LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin in Switzerland

This paper summarises Switzerland’s experience with limited medical use of LSD, MDMA and psilocybin since 2014—reporting over 1,000 exemption approvals and an estimated 2,000–3,000 treatments—and provides an overview of application procedures, indications, treatment settings and phases, plus recommendations on therapist training, ethics and quality assurance for integrating psychedelics‑assisted psychotherapy into clinical practice.

Hallucinogen use among young adults ages 19-30 in the United States: Changes from 2018 to 2021

In a longitudinal US cohort of 11,304 young adults aged 19–30 surveyed 2018–2021, past‑year LSD use remained stable (≈3.7% to 4.2%) while non‑LSD hallucinogen use (e.g. psilocybin) roughly doubled from 3.4% to 6.6%. Use was more likely among males, white participants and those from higher socio‑economic backgrounds, and less likely among Black participants and those without a college‑educated parent.

LSD use in the United States: Examining user demographics and their evolution from 2015-2019

Analysing NSDUH data from 2015–2019, the authors found a 47% increase in past‑year LSD use (0.59% to 0.87%) without a proportional rise in hallucinogen use disorder. Use was linked to greater access and lower perceived risk plus specific sociodemographic and behavioural correlates (e.g. Asian race, low income, fewer children, history of selling drugs, past‑year suicide attempt in adults) and rose among pregnant, 26–34‑year‑old, married respondents and lifetime methamphetamine users, suggesting growing societal acceptance though LSD remains uncommon and not a major driver of public‑health harm.

Hopelessness, Suicidality, and Co-Occurring Substance Use among Adolescent Hallucinogen Users-A National Survey Study

Analysing nationally representative YRBSS data from 2001–2019 (125,550 students), 8.4% of adolescents reported lifetime hallucinogen use, declining from 13.3% to 7.0% over the period. Hallucinogen users had significantly higher odds of feeling sad or hopeless, suicidal ideation and planning, and markedly greater co‑occurring use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other illicit drugs.
