MDMA for Public Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change

19 papers and 2 clinical trials exploring mdma as a treatment for public health, prevention & behaviour change.

Compoundempathogen

MDMA

MDMA is a synthetic empathogen that enhances monoamine release, producing prosocial and anxiolytic effects without frank hallucinosis. Two Phase III trials demonstrated significant PTSD symptom reductions, though FDA review raised concerns about blinding, durability, and safety characterisation.

Full MDMA profile
IndicationApproximately 20% of adults experience a mental health issue in any given year worldwide.

Public Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change

Current research into psychedelics as a means of public health intervention highlights their potential in addressing various behavioural health conditions. As clinical trials expand, the implications for prevention and behaviour change are becoming increasingly apparent.

The Potential Economic and Public Health Impact of MDMA-Assisted Group Therapy for PTSD in Ukraine

Using a decision-analysis model for 1,000 Ukrainian PTSD patients, the study estimates MDMA-assisted group therapy with supplemental individual sessions would cost US$1.1m, avert 19.2 deaths, gain 717 QALYs, have an ICER of US$1,537/QALY and produce net societal savings of US$2.6m, with scaled 50% coverage over 10 years potentially saving ~48,000 lives, 1.5 million QALYs and US$5.6bn. These results indicate MAT is likely to be cost‑effective or cost‑saving and could substantially improve population health, supporting its inclusion in Ukraine’s PTSD treatment strategy.

Psilocybin in alcohol use disorder and comorbid depressive symptoms: Results from a feasibility randomized clinical trial

In this double‑blind, randomised pilot trial of recently detoxified patients with severe alcohol use disorder and comorbid depression, two 25 mg psilocybin‑assisted psychotherapy sessions (versus 1 mg control) were feasible, acceptable and safe. At 12 weeks the 25 mg group showed higher abstinence (55% vs 11%) and significant reductions in percent drinking days and craving frequency, although blinding was imperfect and the study was small and preliminary.

Implementing psychedelic-assisted therapy: History and characteristics of the Swiss limited medical use program

This review (2025) of the Swiss limited access scheme describes how approximately 100 physicians treated 723 patients with MDMA, LSD, or psilocybin in 2024, with patients typically receiving 2-4 psychedelic-assisted therapy sessions within 12 months for treatment-resistant conditions.

Psychedelics-assisted psychotherapy: Experiences with the limited medical use of LSD, MDMA, and psilocybin in Switzerland

This paper summarises Switzerland’s experience with limited medical use of LSD, MDMA and psilocybin since 2014—reporting over 1,000 exemption approvals and an estimated 2,000–3,000 treatments—and provides an overview of application procedures, indications, treatment settings and phases, plus recommendations on therapist training, ethics and quality assurance for integrating psychedelics‑assisted psychotherapy into clinical practice.

MDMA-assisted psychotherapy with adolescents suffering from PTSD: Do or don’t? a qualitative study with youth, parents, and clinicians

This focus group study (n=19) investigated the perspectives of adolescents, parents, and clinicians on MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for adolescents with PTSD. Initial attitudes towards MDMA were mainly unfavourable, but after an explanation of the therapy, all but one participant supported its potential use, emphasizing the importance of research.

Hopelessness, Suicidality, and Co-Occurring Substance Use among Adolescent Hallucinogen Users-A National Survey Study

Analysing nationally representative YRBSS data from 2001–2019 (125,550 students), 8.4% of adolescents reported lifetime hallucinogen use, declining from 13.3% to 7.0% over the period. Hallucinogen users had significantly higher odds of feeling sad or hopeless, suicidal ideation and planning, and markedly greater co‑occurring use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other illicit drugs.
