Mescaline for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)

3 papers and 0 clinical trials exploring mescaline as a treatment for opioid use disorder (oud).

CompoundPhenethylamine

Mescaline

A naturally occurring phenethylamine psychedelic found in certain cacti, investigated for its role in religious practice and psychiatric research.

Full Mescaline profile
IndicationAn estimated 2 million people in the United States have OUD.

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)

Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a prevalent and serious public health issue that is increasingly being targeted for treatment with psychedelics, particularly ibogaine. Recent studies suggest that these compounds may alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings, presenting a potential shift in therapeutic approaches to OUD.

Hopelessness, Suicidality, and Co-Occurring Substance Use among Adolescent Hallucinogen Users-A National Survey Study

Analysing nationally representative YRBSS data from 2001–2019 (125,550 students), 8.4% of adolescents reported lifetime hallucinogen use, declining from 13.3% to 7.0% over the period. Hallucinogen users had significantly higher odds of feeling sad or hopeless, suicidal ideation and planning, and markedly greater co‑occurring use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other illicit drugs.

Associations between classic psychedelics and nicotine dependence in a nationally representative sample

In a nationally representative sample of 214,505 US adults, lifetime use of psilocybin, peyote and mescaline was associated with modestly lower odds of current nicotine dependence, whereas lifetime LSD use was associated with higher odds; experimental studies are needed to establish causality and assess therapeutic potential for smoking cessation.

Associations between classic psychedelics and opioid use disorder in a nationally-representative U.S. adult sample

Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015–2019; N = 214,505), lifetime psilocybin use was associated with significantly lower odds of opioid use disorder (adjusted OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.60–0.83), while other classic psychedelics showed no such association, and psilocybin use was linked to reduced odds for seven of 11 DSM‑IV OUD criteria. These observational findings suggest psilocybin merits further investigation in longitudinal and clinical trials to assess causality.
