Mescaline for Public Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change

8 papers and 0 clinical trials exploring mescaline as a treatment for public health, prevention & behaviour change.

CompoundPhenethylamine

Mescaline

A naturally occurring phenethylamine psychedelic found in certain cacti, investigated for its role in religious practice and psychiatric research.

Full Mescaline profile
IndicationApproximately 20% of adults experience a mental health issue in any given year worldwide.

Public Health, Prevention & Behaviour Change

Current research into psychedelics as a means of public health intervention highlights their potential in addressing various behavioural health conditions. As clinical trials expand, the implications for prevention and behaviour change are becoming increasingly apparent.

Hopelessness, Suicidality, and Co-Occurring Substance Use among Adolescent Hallucinogen Users-A National Survey Study

Analysing nationally representative YRBSS data from 2001–2019 (125,550 students), 8.4% of adolescents reported lifetime hallucinogen use, declining from 13.3% to 7.0% over the period. Hallucinogen users had significantly higher odds of feeling sad or hopeless, suicidal ideation and planning, and markedly greater co‑occurring use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and other illicit drugs.

Associations between classic psychedelics and nicotine dependence in a nationally representative sample

In a nationally representative sample of 214,505 US adults, lifetime use of psilocybin, peyote and mescaline was associated with modestly lower odds of current nicotine dependence, whereas lifetime LSD use was associated with higher odds; experimental studies are needed to establish causality and assess therapeutic potential for smoking cessation.

Classic Psychedelics in Addiction Treatment: The Case for Psilocybin in Tobacco Smoking Cessation

This book chapter (2022) reviews the use of psilocybin in the treatment of addiction with a specific focus on smoking (tobacco use disorder, TUD). After exploring the historical use of psychedelics to treat addiction, modern research on the topic is reviewed. The anti-addiction properties of psychedelics differ but are consistent with the notion that the persisting positive behaviour change prompted by psychedelic therapy is due to the amplification of psychotherapeutic processes.

Associations between classic psychedelics and opioid use disorder in a nationally-representative U.S. adult sample

Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015–2019; N = 214,505), lifetime psilocybin use was associated with significantly lower odds of opioid use disorder (adjusted OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.60–0.83), while other classic psychedelics showed no such association, and psilocybin use was linked to reduced odds for seven of 11 DSM‑IV OUD criteria. These observational findings suggest psilocybin merits further investigation in longitudinal and clinical trials to assess causality.

Exploring protective associations between the use of classic psychedelics and cocaine use disorder: a population-based survey study

In a nationally representative US sample (NSDUH 2015–2019), lifetime peyote use was associated with a greater than 50% reduction in the odds of cocaine use disorder (adjusted OR 0.47) and lowered odds on seven of 11 CUD criteria, whereas psilocybin, LSD and mescaline showed no protective association or were linked to increased odds. The authors recommend studies to examine demographic, personality and contextual confounds and longitudinal research to determine causality and therapeutic potential.

Cross-sectional associations between lifetime use of psychedelic drugs and psychometric measures during the COVID-19 confinement: A transcultural study

In a cross‑sectional online survey of 2,974 English, Portuguese and Spanish speakers during the first COVID‑19 lockdown, regular lifetime users of psychedelic drugs reported lower psychological distress and peritraumatic stress and greater perceived social support than occasional users and non‑users. They also scored higher on novelty‑seeking and self‑transcendence and lower on cooperativeness, suggesting either a protective effect of psychedelics or pre‑existing personality differences that predispose to regular use.
