Mescaline for Set & Setting

3 papers and 0 clinical trials exploring mescaline as a treatment for set & setting.

CompoundPhenethylamine

Mescaline

A naturally occurring phenethylamine psychedelic found in certain cacti, investigated for its role in religious practice and psychiatric research.

Full Mescaline profile
IndicationApproximately 264 million individuals worldwide suffer from depression, with many seeking innovative treatment options such as psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Set & Setting

The concept of 'set and setting' is critical in psychedelic research, influencing therapeutic outcomes in clinical environments. Creating optimal conditions is essential for maximising the efficacy and safety of psychedelic-assisted therapies, particularly in the context of mental health disorders.

The association between naturalistic use of psychedelics and co-occurring substance use disorders

Using 2017 NSDUH data (n=56,276), the authors found past naturalistic use of peyote/mescaline was associated with lower odds of past-year substance dependence or abuse (adjusted OR 0.68, p<0.001), whereas past LSD and psilocybin use were associated with increased odds; none of the classic psychedelics were linked to nicotine dependence. The paper notes it is unclear whether these differences reflect pharmacological properties or the cultural/ceremonial contexts of peyote/mescaline use.

Altered States of Consciousness During Ceremonial San Pedro Use

This open-label ceremonial use study (n=42) investigates the consciousness altering effects of San Pedro, a mescaline containing cactus, in ceremonial psychedelic retreats in Europe. Results indicate that San Pedro induces deviations from normal waking consciousness on all 11 subscales of the 11D-ASC, moderate scores of ego-dissolution, and a complete mystical experience in two thirds of participants.

Psychedelic Agents in Creative Problem-Solving: A Pilot Study

This pilot study of 27 professionally employed men found that a single, carefully structured psychedelic session with LSD-25 or mescaline appeared to facilitate creative problem‑solving, especially during the “illumination” phase. Subjective reports, creativity tests and assessments of solution utility suggested that enhanced creative ability persisted for some participants for several weeks afterwards.
