Health-related behavioral changes following the use of psychedelics in naturalistic settings

This cross-sectional study (n=2,510) of US adults with psychedelic experience found that participants retrospectively reported widespread improvements in health behaviours including reduced alcohol (66%) and tobacco (49%) use, better dietary habits (49%), and decreased impulsivity (48-72%), with microdosers and frequent users showing greater positive changes.

The association between naturalistic use of psychedelics and co-occurring substance use disorders

Using 2017 NSDUH data (n=56,276), the authors found past naturalistic use of peyote/mescaline was associated with lower odds of past-year substance dependence or abuse (adjusted OR 0.68, p<0.001), whereas past LSD and psilocybin use were associated with increased odds; none of the classic psychedelics were linked to nicotine dependence. The paper notes it is unclear whether these differences reflect pharmacological properties or the cultural/ceremonial contexts of peyote/mescaline use.

Associations between classic psychedelics and nicotine dependence in a nationally representative sample

In a nationally representative sample of 214,505 US adults, lifetime use of psilocybin, peyote and mescaline was associated with modestly lower odds of current nicotine dependence, whereas lifetime LSD use was associated with higher odds; experimental studies are needed to establish causality and assess therapeutic potential for smoking cessation.

Classic Psychedelics in Addiction Treatment: The Case for Psilocybin in Tobacco Smoking Cessation

This book chapter (2022) reviews the use of psilocybin in the treatment of addiction with a specific focus on smoking (tobacco use disorder, TUD). After exploring the historical use of psychedelics to treat addiction, modern research on the topic is reviewed. The anti-addiction properties of psychedelics differ but are consistent with the notion that the persisting positive behaviour change prompted by psychedelic therapy is due to the amplification of psychotherapeutic processes.

Association Between Lifetime Classic Psychedelic Use and Hypertension in the Past Year

Using nationally representative US survey data (NSDUH 2005–2014), lifetime use of classic psychedelics was associated with lower odds of past‑year hypertension after adjustment (adjusted odds ratio 0.86, 95% CI 0.81–0.91), an effect driven specifically by lifetime tryptamine use (aOR 0.80, 95% CI 0.73–0.89). These cross‑sectional findings suggest a potential protective link but cannot establish causality; randomised controlled trials are needed to probe mechanisms and causal effects on blood pressure.
