Credentialing
Licensing bodies, professional boards, and regulatory agencies establishing standards for psychedelic therapy practice.
Who is allowed to deliver psychedelic therapy, and who decides? The credentialing layer answers both: certification programmes that train and badge practitioners, and the licensing boards and regulators that make some credentials legally required. The two are easy to confuse and importantly different, since a certificate is only as valuable as the body recognising it.
Today, legally binding licensure exists mainly in state programmes (Oregon’s facilitator licence, Colorado’s equivalent), while dozens of certification programmes compete in an unregulated market everywhere else. Each profile records which kind of body an organisation is, and what its credential actually authorises.

Frequently asked questions
- Is there a recognised licence for psychedelic therapists?
Only in specific jurisdictions. Oregon and Colorado license facilitators for their state programmes, with mandated training hours and examinations; those boards are tracked here. Elsewhere, no government licence for psychedelic therapy exists yet, and practitioners work under their existing clinical licences within trials or approved treatments.
- Do the certification programmes carry real weight?
Their weight is reputational rather than legal in most places. Certificates from established programmes signal training to employers and peers but confer no legal permission by themselves. The exception is where a state programme names specific approved training providers, which the relevant profiles note.
- How does credentialing connect to the training categories?
Training programmes teach; credentialing bodies certify and license. Many organisations do both, so several appear in this category and in Formal or Informal Training. Our competencies pages map what the trainings actually cover against clinical competency frameworks.
